Letter Names & Sounds

Learning and Applying Letter-Sound Knowledge

Units in this phase have two foci:
1) learning letter-sound knowledge to apply in predictable text and 2) developing narrative language skills. Each unit begins with a read-aloud lesson designed to build background knowledge for the topic or story readers will read. Oral language lessons include generating stories from picture-story sequences with an emphasis on making inferences.

As the lessons progress, readers will begin to have a speech-to-print match with text and apply their letter-sound knowledge to recognize words. Readers are guided to integrate the text with the illustrations to make meaning.
