Word Reading & Comprehension Skills
Learning and Applying Letter-Sound Knowledge
Units in this section have two foci: learning letter-sound knowledge (foundational skills) and applying it into the predictable text (comprehension skills). Each unit begins with a read-aloud lesson designed to build background knowledge for the topic/story students will read about in the predictable text. As the lessons progress, students will develop oral language and reading comprehension skills as well as phonics skills, which helps them sound out the words and read with understanding.
