Point to each picture as you Say I see three pictures on the board. Let’s name them together: hook, moon, paw. They are all nouns and I think they have something in common in terms of how they are spelled.

Point to the picture and Say Look at the banner the two vowels are holding. It says Variant Vowels. Variant means something is different in some way. The vowels in this group have a pronunciation that is different from the long vowel sound we expect when we see a vowel team.
In this book, we are going to learn about variant vowel teams that spell three sounds: /o͝o/, /o͞o/, and /ô/ sounds.
