If your reader makes an error on reading a word, here are two strategies we recommend.
Example – sounding out the word Arctic
Sound the letters ar with the bossy R pronunciation.
Sound the hard sound of the letter c.
Blend the letters ar and c.
Sound the letter t.
Sound the letter i.
Blend the letters t and i.
Sound the hard sound of the letter c.
Blend the letters t, i, and c.
Blend the letters altogether.
Example – sounding out the word north
Reader: (reading the word north as nort)
Teacher: (covering the letters th in the word north) What letter would you expect to see if this word says nort?
Reader: letter t.
Teacher: (pointing to the letters th in the word north) But we have the digraph th. What sound does the digraph th make?
Reader: /ð/ or /θ/.
Teacher: In this word, the digraph th makes the quiet sound. What’s the quiet sound of the digraph th?
Reader: /θ/.
Teacher: Then this word ends with the /θ/ sound. Can you read this word again?
Reader: north.

Example
Let’s review the word Arctic Circle. Repeat after me: Arctic Circle. It means the top part of the globe, where the sun disappears in the winter and stays all night in the summer.
