If your reader makes an error on reading a word, here are two strategies we recommend.
Example – sounding out the word sits
Sound the letter s.
Sound the letter i.
Blend the letters s and i.
Sound the letter t.
Blend the letters s, i, and t.
Sound the letter s.
Blend the letters s, i, t, and s.
Example – sounding out the word sits
Reader: (reading the word sits as sit)
Teacher: (covering the letters ts in the word sits) What letter would you expect to see if this word says sit?
Reader: letter t.
Teacher: (pointing to the letters ts in the word sits) But we have the letters ts. What sound does the letter t make?
Reader: /t/.
Teacher: What sound does the letter s make?
Reader: /s/.
Teacher: Then this word ends with the /ts/ sound. Can we read this word again?
Reader: sits.
