If your reader makes an error on reading a word, here are two strategies we recommend.
Example – sounding out the word naps
Sound the letter n.
Sound the letter a.
Blend the letters n and a.
Sound the letter p.
Blend the letters n, a, and p.
Sound the letter s.
Blend the letters n, a, p, and s.
Example – sounding out the word mat
Reader: (reading the word mat as nat)
Teacher: (covering the letter m in the word mat) What letter would you expect to see if this word says nat?
Reader: letter n.
Teacher: (pointing to the letter m in the word mat) But we have the letter m. What sound does the letter m make?
Reader: /m/.
Teacher: Then this word starts with the /m/ sound. Can we read this word again?
Reader: mat.
